Falling Waters State Park is an important historic and geographic location featuring unique geographical formations and a long and colorful history of human use and habitation.

The location of the park was deeded to the state in 1962 but the area now known as the Falling Waters State Park has always been an important site in Florida history. The many caves and sinkholes were used by Indian warriors during the Seminole Wars. It also contained a grist mill and later a distillery during and after the civil wars, and was the location of the first oil well in Florida which was capped in 1921.

The park stands on a bed of limestone which was eroded over time by water which created the sinkholes that can be visited today.
