Today?s Fort Barrancas in Pensacola, Florida, is just a portion of the original Fort San Carlos de Barrancas. It has been renamed as such in 1839, when the hilltop part of the fort was rebuilt using brick. The other area of the original fortification, the wooden water batter downhill, was called Fort San Carlos.

The Fort Barrancas is now a part of the Naval Air Station Pensacola. It is historically significant because of its long existence, spanning a total of more than three centuries. Originally constructed by the Spanish in 1698, it has been destroyed, rebuilt, captured, and re-captured a couple of times, giving the site a very colorful past. It was used by the Spanish, English, and American troops at different times.

Today, the Fort Barrancas is under the care of the National Park Service.
