The Native Americans of the Mississippian culture is considered to be the best builders of prehistoric mound complexes in North America. This is why their works are almost automatically given high importance and declared as historic landmarks.

The Fort Walton Mound in Fort Walton Beach, Florida is one good example of this group?s work. This one is believed to be built in 850 AD. This mound used to belong to a large complex, with a village in its center and agricultural land surrounding it. The other two existing mounds from this old Native American home are the Lake Jackson Mounds and Letchworth Mounds state parks.

The Fort Walton Mound is now operated by the Indian Temple Mound and Museum under the Fort Walton Beach Heritage Park & Cultural Center.
