The Gasparilla Pirate Festival is an annual celebration held in Tampa, Florida. It observes the local lore that tells of Jose Gaspar, an alleged Spanish pirate captain, who was said to have operated in Southwest Florida.
The Gasparilla Pirate Festival is a very big event, attracting at least 400,000 people yearly. It follows a theme of invasion of the city, with the pirate ship arriving at Tampa Bay and parading down the Bayshore Boulevard. The pirates are known as the ?Krewe?, or organizations that are also local residents of the city.
Celebrated yearly around the month of January, the Gasparilla Pirate Festival is more than 100 years old now, with its origins tracing back to 1904, when the first Gasparilla was held.
