The Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse is the second lighthouse to be ever built in the area. The first one was constructed in 1835, weakened by a strong storm, attacked by Seminole Indians during the Second Seminole War, and collapsed in 1836. It never really fulfilled its functions, as the oil for the lamp never reached the site.

Today’s Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse was constructed in 1883, after several shipwrecks took place around the area. It stands at 175 feet in height, making it one of the tallest buildings of the sort in all of the United States.

Declared as a National Historic Landmark in 1998, the Ponce De Leon Inlet Light now serves as a museum, after being restored by the Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse Preservation Association.
