Constructed from 1982 to 1987, the Sunshine Skyway Bridge was built in replacement to a 1954 bridge that was partly destroyed in a collision that took place in 1980. It measures a total of 5.5 miles or 8.9 km with a total width of 94 feet and height of 431 feet.

The Sunshine Skyway Bridge was officially named as the Bob Graham Sunshine Skyway Bridge in 2005, in honor of the Governor of Florida and US Senator who helped make the construction of the bridge possible.
