The Windover Archaeological Site became a National Historic Landmark in 1987 for having very old human bones buried under the peat at the bottom of the muck pond. These 168 skeletal remains were tested and examined thoroughly, and experts say t hat they are from more than seven thousand years ago. This number makes the Windover Archaeological Site to have the largest finds from the Archaic Period.

Some may have questioned the integrity of the remains, but the peat conditions became perfect for preserving the ancient remains. Some DNA from the brain tissue was even found on the skulls recovered. This allowed the experts to sequence the biological findings. All of these aren?t really bad, considering that the site was only found accidentally during a road widening project in 1982.
