Check out World End south of the city. If ever there was a hidden gem for getting outdoors near the city, this is it. There are lots of Trustees of Reservations properties worth checking out (no I don't work for them).

In summer, check out the Charles River Canoe and Kayak rentals in Newton.

It is on the river, at intersections of Route 30 and Route 128/95, near the Weston Mass Pike connections.

You can paddle up river to Newton Lower Falls, and down river to the Waltham damn.

They have canoes, kayaks, and paddle boats (if you dont want to go too far).

Take a walk around Deer Island in Winthrop, nice little paved paths all around it, just pray the sewage eggs never erupt when you are there....

Cape Cod Rail Trail

It is about 24 miles long from Dennis to Wellfleet.

Good trail for biking or xcountry skiing. Imagine an old train line that travels through thw woods and through towns with some nice scenery and people watching. It's paved smooth and has fostered a string of pastry/bike shop/cafes along the way.

Google it.

Take the ferry out to the Boston Harbor Islands. You can camp on some of them, others just make great day trips. It's surprising how many beautiful spots are so close.

If you like bar-b-q check out Red Bones in Davis Square. Right off the redline and the food is fantastic! Get a half rack of the Memphis Ribs... you will not be disappointed.
