Gold Mountain is a fun one, as well as Horse thief canyon. Look for other jeeps or off roaders at the visitor center and see if you can join them. Another option is the Big Bear Forest Fest. Held in June and you go on organized guided runs.
Look up Inland Empire 4 wheelers as they host the event.

Here are a few Big Bear trails that shouldn't be missed if you plan to visit.

John Bull trail
Holcomb Valley
Dishpan Springs
Deep Creek
Boulder Alley

I haven't been in awhile but if I'm not mistaken there have been more than a few bear sightings in the last 10 yrs. Up untill then bears were believed to exstinct in that area.
It's probably best if camping to take precaution just to be on safe side.
It is a fact that the largest grizzly recorded in california, was recorded there.
Hence the name Big Bear.
In my opinion it's a top 10 on the must do list for offroad areas in Ca.
If you don't mind not having campground facilities. There is a great spot half way through the John Bull. It Drops down about the length of a wrangler off the main trail & opens up into a pretty large sandy area great for camping. The last time I was there
it had a fire pit right in the middle.
Climb to the top of boulders (on foot) for an awesome veiw.
Good luck, happy trails, & tread lightly!

I picked up a map from my local DFG office. It has all the BLM land listed so you know whats private and whats not. They have trails listed on them as well.
