I'm considering a visit out to California. Not sure where....but will probably hit L.A. and the beach. What do I need to make sure I go and do? Any help would be appreciated!
This would depend on your personal tastes and how thick your wallet is. Some of the bigger attractions in the LA area would be the handprints at Grouman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood, Sunset Blvd, Venice Beach, Santa Monica Beach, Redondo Beach.
If San Francisco is in your budget, this is also a must see in California. The Golden Gate Bridge, the great seafood and sour dough bread at the piers, the culture of their China Town, and the quirky winding streets.
Some other notable mentions would be the Sequoia Trees in Central California, Mission Bay in San Diego, Seaworld and the San Diego Zoo, and my obvious favorites are Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm in Southern California.
Skip the drama of LA and visit central and northern California. As havasu mentioned, the Sequoia Trees are amazing and San Francisco has a lot to offer. If you must hit LA, then you have the theme parks (Disneyland, Knots Berry Farm, Universal Studios), warm beaches, and the downtown "Hollywood" attractions.

bingo! too many places to see in one trip. Ca. is practically half the west coast. and speaking of... if you plan your trip in summer, june, july, ect. most of the coast areas will be in fog including LA. out here is flip flop for the coast. Sierra's and NorCal are best in summer, but the coastal areas such as SF, central coast and parts of LA are best in spring and fall.
Land in San Fran drive the coast to Big Sur you cant go wrong. Monterey and Carmel are awesome places, hit the 17mile drive in pebble beach more south is Hurst Castle san louis obispo (sp) tired head dow to Pismo Beach you can drive on the beach right there...

+1 Redondo Beach - I grew up there, never thought of it as a tourist destination but it's a great place and we have a really nice pier and harbor area. If you like beer try Nadja's Place on the Pier, great Belgian beer selection as well as many, many others.
Long Beach has a great downtown district, I suggest coming down to 2nd street and taking a gondola ride through the canals.
I must be an old fuddy-dud. I would have recommended the old historical trail. Olvera Street, San Gabriel mission, Mission San Juan Capistrano to the south, Mission San Fernando & BuenaVentura to the north. Santa Barbara Mission & presidio too.
head dow to Pismo Beach you can drive on the beach right there...
