We pay just a little over 1% in Lake Forest. Plus the sales and income tax.

I only pay about 800 a year on my property taxes. The market is down, so my county appraised my house super low.

Even though our home value is down, the property taxes still go up 2% a year as allowed by Prop 13. As mentioned above, I fight with the tax office every year. They don't understand (or care) why I am upset about paying higher taxes on something that is worth half as much.

Taxes are definitely not low in CA. I've never heard that one. Maybe someone moving here from NY or NJ might think so. I can't think of anything low in CA.

Like everything in government, they find a way to screw you over regardless. Althought prop. 13 kept my property tax 'reasonable', they try to raise it everyyear like songman said, and then they add school taxes and fire assesments and improvements... so it keeps on going and going and going up... kinda like the energizer bunny!
