I fall asleep by the campfire pretty often because I'm mesmerized by stars, the fire or all the curious "pets" that come to check it out.

Yah, apparently one of the few times there weren't clouds of mosquitos around.

My first 3 trips to the lower Rideau were headnet time when no wind was blowing. The next time I had warned a new girlfriend to be ready with Deet as the sun set.
No need. We sat unmolested eating our dinners with dragonflies sitting on our heads and shoulders just waiting...........

I love dragonflies!

The only time the bugs are really bad around here is in the summer

This is our tent in the making about 20 years ago.

cute cottage, is it still standing?

when my father was transferred from MN to PA we brought along our rather large screenhouse and the heavy deck it attached to. We had a corner property in PA and the screenhouse drew many confused looks till we met the neighbors.
No one in PA had ever seen the like and when we explained it helped with the mosquitoes the looks grew more puzzled.

It seems the "Land of 10,000 lakes" (closer to 20,000) is why the Minnesota state bird is the mosquito.

We now owned a half ton white elephant. Then a hurricane punched inland far enough to float the screenhouse around the backyard 6 inches off the ground. The neighbors felt our white elephant was an unguided missile so pop sold it for a loss.

Do you have those kangaroo mice in Quebec? We ran into them in the Adirondacks where one fell in love with my girlfriend.
That was the only time we had a mouse for company sitting by the fire.

That one mouse is the only one I've ever seen and he's definitely smart & cute.

I've never intentionally camped in winter. A few October trips met snow in the mountains and my coffee water frozen. I've had freezing nights on the lower slopes of Marcy in the Adirondaks in August.

The woods can be beautiful in winter but I'd miss all the living things I'm used to. Without a jeep I doubt I could reach the type of camping spots I'd prefer.
