same thing for me. i can walk to the laguna in about 3 minutes. i can see the bay from my front yard and the kids rise their bikes and play at the little park at the end of our street

You can drive on the beach there, but most of it isn't really "jeepin" type material. Just about any car can drive on it and it is counted as a street.

The Padre Island National seashore has some stretches that are marked as "4wd only", and although I have never tested those sections out for myself, I would assume that they would make for a more engaging drive, should that be what you're looking for.
