You're probably paid as a contractor on a 1099-MISC, rather than as an employee on a W2. (Those are both tax forms that show how much someone paid you for your work. They will report those figures to the IRS when they do their taxes.) You'll want to pay your taxes quarterly, not at the end of the year, otherwise the IRS will issue fines and penalties. I figure out my quarterly tax bill for this year when I do my taxes for last year; I'm not completely sure how to go about figuring them out for the first year you are in business. (I started working as a contractor in the 4th quarter of that year, so I just did my taxes as usual)
MAKE SURE YOU KEEP ALL YOUR RECEIPTS. As a contractor, you're a businessman. You can write off almost everything you buy for business purposes as a loss, and greatly lower your tax bill.
Also, don't forget state and local taxes... You'll probably have to do something similar for them.
