Worked in Food?

I'm kind of curious to see how many people started working in the food industry?

At 15 my pop pulled strings and got me a job as a dishwasher for the sub contractor that handled their cafeteria. I loaded & emptied big shallow bins of china & glass. We ran them thru a staged "carwash for plates" that ran at just below boiling point.

Lost the skin on both forearms in 3 days. The only defense was to hold the bin away from your body to prevent scalding. I liked that job. For the next 20 years I had steel forearms and a scary grip.

Kitchens get insane. Lots of drama and cliques are what I recall most.

2 years out of the kitchen and my knuckles are just now growing hair back, I think that's a good thing.

The happiest day in my hotel career was when I graduated from dishwasher to busboy.
And then there was the time....

By age 15 I was used to being held to adult criteria as a worker. I learned a good deal about several industries as a young worker and I've seen how it helped me later in life.

In PA you really had to beat the bushes to find a kid to cut your lawn. Forget about shoveling snow, they're allergic.

It was not my first job, but I was a bus boy, and waiter at a hotel restaurant for a while.
