Interview Attire

What is proper? I have seen so many people dress extremely casual to interviews. Is that the new norm? I have always tried to dress up, I feel it's better to be over-dressed than under-dressed... Am I wrong?

I always go for business casual unless otherwise noted.

For me it's business casual if I know the people (which happens more and more often in my field), and a suit (formal??) if I don't know the people. I subscribe to the "better to be overdressed than under-dressed" philosophy like you. Besides, it's pretty cool to be better dressed than the interviewer.

For me it would depend a lot on the type of position and the company I was being interviewed for, but if unsure I would err on the side of overdressed.

Working as a cook I was taught to never come to an interview in my chef coat. It was better to look like a dishwasher.

The old rule was to dress for the job you want. I still try to do that.

On the East coast a suit is a good idea if you're looking for anything out of the shop. In Oregon you rarely see a suit outside of Salem or Portland. I'd suggest dressing in whatever your version of "logger chic" might be.
