Potatoes in the refrigerator?

I have just been told not to keep potatoes in the refrigerator because it makes them go bad???
But the store keeps them in a refrigerated sales shelf so what's up?

I have never seen potatoes stored with refrigeration at a store, maybe your store produce person is just not too smart. They should be stored cool and dark. Light makes them turn green and sprout, refrigeration makes them go brown inside. Best storage temperature is 50F. Most grocers just leave them out at room temperature because they get bought quickly, but the larger pallets of them in the back are better controlled.

I worked as a produce manager years ago. We never refrigerated potatoes. They are best kept in a cool, dry, dark area.
