Produce? You get what you pay for?

Over in town we have several stores that carry produce. Some are cheaper than others. We've found that the cheaper produce from one or two stores in town are a little "less fresh" than the higher priced stores. As it turns out, it seems cheaper in the long run to go ahead and pay the extra price. Any body else find this too? We typically buy from a major chain that has a dept store & grocery store combined but I think maybe we'll buy all our produce from the grocery store instead..

Here it's HEB or nothing. None of the other stores have good produce regardless of the price.

I'm fairly young and can tell you that produce ain't nothing like it was in the 1970s when a peach actually had juice in it, unlike the tasteless cardboard being sold for way too much money these days!

I can't afford Safeway produce prices let alone afford organics.

I recently watched a show where the point was made that a small door (leading to a concrete patio) in a football field building full of chickens constituted "free range" chickens. You don't always get what you thought you were paying for.

If I'm rich can your please lead me to my money? (maybe I'm Indian)

I tried growing some things here several times, and something gets INSIDE the screening and GOBBLES it all down to nothing. I can't even grow chilies without them pesty little rascals eating em up. I can't even go organic here at home in a cage.

I concur with Whole Foods Market. I buy all my dry goods from a Raileys spin off called Food Source which is cheaper than most grocery stores but buy all my produce and meats are from Whole Foods Market. The prices at Whole Foods if a bit more than regular grocery stores but the quality is well worth the cost.

We also grow our own summer garden which helps alot and the quality of your own home grown is always the best. For the winter and for the produce you don't have in your garden, Whole Foods is the way to go.
