For a house that big, you're lucky to be paying so little!

1800 sq ft. original part 1920s, living room, 40's, 2 beds and new bath, 50's, Wood heat with small electric heater i use in bedroom. Electricity about 110 winter and 75 summer. Well that covers my home, tenant mobile, barn and picnic grounds averages 15/mo. Ranch has deeded water rights to creek and aquifer below. Has been pumped out by UTC next door but they replaced it with MEK, TCE and ammonium perchlorate, nice folks aren't they. Other 5 drops average 11/mo unless guests in the houses.

my home is 2680sqft. it is all electric. last monthes bill was for $150 because we opened the doors and windows instead of running the air. i have also put a large wood burning stove in thebasement. i have a total of 12 100 watt solar panels mounted on my roof and run into grid tie inverters to help lower my bill(this time next year i will have 24 of them at the very least. i want to buy two a month till this time next year. that would make me have 36 panels). i have 4 more on the way. i also have 8 45 watt panels running back to a battery bank of 22 deep cycle batteries that are 125 ah batteries. if i had known when i biult my house, i would have had my breaker box put in the garage. i have been purchasing the xantrex inverters that i can take the 3 bedrooms and the living room and run them off the battery bank. that would leave the garage, kitchen and basement on the electric company only. they would run my central air, hot water heater and my kitchen stove and frig, the air compressor and deep freezes out in the garage.

getting off the grid isn't hard. getting a battery bank large enough to run a home and still be 12 volt is the costly part. the panels and inverters aren't that bad really.

my water bill is normally around $30 a month. RainReserve Rain Barrel Diverter Kit/Rain Diverter Kit & Rainwater Recycling is how i'm going to lower the down alot.

my next home will be off grid and i'll have around a 5000 gallon tank in the ground holding rain water. i'll run it through a reverse osmosis filter, then filter it again before using it in the home.

I heat one week a year here but we have the same sized Winter bill. Then I saw the 2 to 4 computers part. My flat screen and a computer really do heat my bedroom. Not sure if that would keep me thawed out in Omaha though.
