Allergy Medication

What do you take? I'm about to give up on it.

I've tried Claritin Allegra and Zyrtec, nothing is helping, what do you take and does it work? What allergies is it for?

Benadryl. Not the cheap knockoff brands - they don't work. I take the pink tablets and they work better than the capsules. NOTHING else works. I tried all the guinea pig drugs and Claritin is good for drying you up the first couple of doses, after that I think my histamines build up a tolerance. If you can get used to Benadryl it won't knock you out anymore. They used to make me hyper, now I don't see how anybody can take more than one. If you need to sleep take one! I don't dare take them after 4pm if I have to work the next day. Good for some cases of migraine and pressure headaches. As for the "side effects" of diphenhydramine, I think they use that to scare you into buying their study drugs. I never noticed any other than sleeping really well and not waking up groggy.

I keep some childrens' liquid in the fridge in case one of my dogs messes with scorpions or bees. 1 cc/ml per 10 lbs. That's what the vet will give them for the price of an emergency visit.

Benadryl makes me very sleepy. I can take it at night but any other time and I'm a zombie.

Sean's post illustrates how individual our unique needs are. I just discovered Benadry helps as a sleeping pill two years ago. 4 at bedtime barely help at all anymore but they have never made me hyper.

For me one 10 mg. Cetrazine a day plus two Sudafed and a tab of Mucinex that loosens chest congestion plus those bedtime benadryl are used daily 6 months or more a year.

Also helpful are air cleaners and a humidifier. Clean your AC filter frequently and get a neti pot. This is coping rather than cure.

Many of us have an allergy to dust mites but this is easily managed. Walmart sells affordable mattress covers and pillow cases a dustmite can't penetrate. They're made of Tyvek and they work. Swap your pillows for hypoallergenic ones too.

Dust Mites: Everything You Might Not Want To Know!

Just thinking of these dust mites living in your pillow by the millions, eating your dead skin and hair is enough to make even Gov. Arnold Schwartznegger sick. The are a major cause of asthma and allergies; especially in vulnerable individuals, such as children and the elderly. According to the American College of Asthma, Allergy & Immunology, approximately 10 percent of Americans exhibit allergic sensitivity to dust mites. In the spring, pollen aggravates allergies, and dustmite infestations make it worse. The Fall and Winter months are a particular problem, as we close up our houses and the concentrations of dust mites and their feces increases inside. Read on to find out what you can do about dust mites!

Detection

House dust mite presence is often suspected before they are actually seen and accurately identified. Requests for control often come from individuals who have been diagnosed by medical personnel as allergic to the house dust mite or the allergens produced.

The presence of house dust mites can be confirmed microscopically which requires collecting samples from mattresses, couches or carpets. Also, it requires the use of a microscope with sufficient magnification and the technical ability to recognize house dust mites under the microscope. In general practice, testing is unnecessary. dustmites are extremely common in household environments. They virtually always show up in a test, so testing just adds expense. A better question than "are dust mites present?" is "How can I control or remove them?"

The BEST and most effective way to deal with alergies is to see your EN&T specialist. They will give your "exposures" until you react, then slowly give it to you until your body's immune system builds up a tolerance to it. It takes sometimes years. The problem with allergies is that people think they are "nothing" but they can't make you very ill and can even cause death. Most employers will not excuse a "call in" for allergies thinking they're just sniffles but they can be bad.

Tried that and was on shots for 6 months before my move West. I found an allergist here and gave him my records. He told me the PA allergist had tested me at levels everyone would show a reaction. He suggested I try another approach so I work with my doctor who while helpful is also unable to give me full relief.

I've heard if it's a plant that flowers eating honey made by bees who dined on that plant's nectar works. I'm looking for honey made from hops flowers.

Back in PA I dated a woman my age (older than dirt) who was put on opiates from childhood thru her mid twenties because back then that was severe allergy treatment.

Austin; my doc sez that each allergen you're reacting too is like a layer. The treatment is to treat the symptoms with corresponding layers of intensity. That for some means being inside living on AC & air filters. For me it's trying to catch early symptoms & pounce fast but it's annoying, has limited success and can change your life more than you're willing to do.

Watch your barometer too. A change from overcast to dry & chilly can knock me for a loop. You're young enough that you may grow out of it. My own allergies were actually triggered by sobriety. My body is so terrified by the stuff I fed it that these days it's stages a red alert for everything from tomatoes to grass clippings.

Consult a professional but get a recommendation first. I did just that but it was bad advice.

I've had issues with it in the past, mainly due to the headaches I get.

Issues with allergy shots? Might be an immune response.

Long before I realized allergies were involved I'd get excruciating sinus headaches. I get them still but far less often and Sudafed usually is enough to break them. You must go out of your way to stay hydrated because you need those fluids in motion and not building up pressure in your head. Less more & more water when it's hot.

If your head feels swollen put an humidifier in a bathroom turned to high for an hour. Then go in and kill 30 minutes reading the newspaper. Your AC is drying your air so try to put some humidity back into your home.

I'm sorry I meant with calling in.

I'm going to try the humidifier though, I need something to keep my nasal passages moist.

Our local thrift stores always have a good supply. The only thing to look for is the washer that seals the water reservoir. If it isn't dried out grab it.

Dry air is tough on our throats and lungs so humidity will also keep your family healthier.
