Anyone done any research or know anything about Fibromyalgia?
Have someone in my wife's family that claims they have it. I read a lot about it and it seems very questionable about the reality of it being a real disease.

It is very devastating. No known cure or reliable treatment. I know three people who have it. They say every muscle in their body aches and some suffer from periodic hypersensitivity as well.
Not fake but difficult to diagnose. A close friend who never complains was reduced to bed rest by fibro for months. She did finally get help from a NJ specialist.
The average physician is intimidated by a disease with peculiar symptoms and some still deny fibro's existence. Your family member needs to seek out someone who is trained to assess symptoms.

The "diagnosed" cases of Fibromyalgia are going through the roof. The most common symptom is an inability to work and collect insurance or welfare. I rented a room to a person supposedly with FM. She did nothing until she inherited some money and then suddenly she was fine and able to open her own business. When the business went down the tubes with the money the FM returned almost instantly. I did some research and while I dont doubt that there are some real cases, the scammers are beating this one to death. There was a study I read (I wish I could remember where) that indicated there was a direct correlation to income in people reporting FM. It was very low in those making 6 figures or more and highest wouldn't you guess it in those seeking state assistance. The last studies which you can get at through wikipedia seem to indicate the bulk of cases are fake, followed by psychosomatic followed by those with bona fide FM. It's a sad story but between 5 and 10% of our population does not want to work and EARN a living, they feel they are owed and entitled to collect from the government (read taxpayer). FM is a perfect scam for them because is no definitive test to confirm or deny it's existence.
Good for them. I never said I dont doubt there are bona fide cases but it is a perfectly condition for faking and this hurts everyone, especially those with the real thing. I am glad you family is coping. I got run over by a car going 40 MPH 6 uears ago. I had 41 fractures and was told I would most likely not walk again and if I did it would require assistance. I was off work for six months and it could have been permament but I did not want that. I spent all of my waking moments working on my recovery and I am fine - well I still have some serious pain from time to time. I also received my blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I dont know if the data is available due to privacy issues but my friend who works at a welfare office sasy the claims are going through thr roof. And like I said the latest studies are showing it is nowhere near as prevalent as we are seeing.

Oh trust me, I believe it and it pisses me off to no end that I am in essence taking care of these said 'fakers' with my HARD EARNED TAX DOLLARS that are taken from me every payday. Im there with you as a disabled vet. I HATE government assistance and during the early years of my marriage we did everything we possibly could to not use it.
It is most definitely a real disease. My niece and my mother have it. It is excruciating. My niece had to leave her high school and finish at home, in bed. Very rarely does she find the energy to go out with friends. I practically have to drug and drag her to the river if I want her to float with me. She is constantly on pain meds and feels very weak from them.
I do not doubt people are scamming the system with this one. It's easy to fake and hard to diagnose. Hell, I'd like some free money, but I cannot swallow that thing called pride. No way, no how.
