We decided to try out backyard chicken farming about a month ago. Really simple setup. Built a coup and fenced in roughly an area 18'x32' to live and graze in. Started getting eggs pretty quickly and they are delicious! Haven't had any pests so far or really any major troubles or sickness yet. Been pleasent and the reward is quite nice.
I grew up chicken farming in Central Texas, and I caution you, they bring out chicken snakes. They are huge green and ugly. You have to kill them, if not they just come back and steal your eggs.
I don't, my GFs best friend raises em in her backyard near my parents house. Never realize how popular it was til I started talking to her about it recently.
My family had chickens once
They smelled bad. The eggs were good, though.
One time, we put a live frog in there, and they pecked to death. Didn't even eat it. Just murdered it.
Another time, we put some spoiled chicken breast in the coop.
They ate it
they ate it alllll up.
We had chickens growing up, I hate them! Chicken farms smell so darn bad in my opinion. I would much rather put up with the cow manure that I put up with on a day to day basis being a dairy farmer.
While we don't have the snakes in MI, thankfully at that. We do have a bad fox, and coyote problem. I can't tell you how many nights I've spent camped out with a rifle waiting for them to come in.
The wife and I have been interested in this as well. The smell is one of my main concerns. Now I know a chicken farm stinks, i get that, but what about only having 2-3?
