Harbor freight welder

Any one used the 110 volt version. Planning on some projects around the house and garage, welding to a 1/4 or 3/8 plate for brackets, everything else is thin .063 3/4 square tube. i've heard it works extremely well if you swap out the original spool of wire for a higher quality roll. Can anyone back that up?

I used a buddies once and couldn't get a good consistent bead to save my life, either could he. I would try and find a used miller, lincoln, or hobart on craigslist. I've used lincolns and millers, and prefer the miller because I think the gun is nicer. BTW I run a Miller for mig and have an old lincoln for stick.

I have one and it had problems with the wire feeding from day one. Now that the warranty is over, and the feeder will not work at all.

I asked this exact question on another forum because I wanted an economy welder. I received about 10 negative replies, and no good replies.

I found one at my Inlaw's house this weekend(there having a garage sale soon and a friend wanted them to try to sell it) I tried it and it sucked. I would NEVER buy one.

My brother had one and it was terrible. Overheated frequently and didn't penetrate well. He sold it and got a much better unit from craigslist for the same price.

Not good.

They have very low run time. Like 10% max, or they overheat and die. Basically, I'd suggest a good used one over a new Harbor Freight. There are also some good cheaper ones on ebay. Used to be a place called Smiley tools on there I got one from once. Was a very good 5 in 1 welder I still use. I have a miller mig also now, but I use the plasma cutter and stick on that one all the time. I think they are sold under different brands but they are red and come in a bunch of models/prices.

Exactly you get what you pay for. I wouldn't use their welders for anything other than craft time myself.

General rule of thumb for harbor freight tools is if it costs more than $10 don't buy it unless it's something you're only going to use once or twice.
