I've got lots of fond memories camping and fishin on the banks of the Wabash river. Hard to believe there's no thread on it yet. River folks are great people. Montezuma is my usual haunts.
Anybody else love the Wabash?
I can understand that, though it makes for a much needed escape from the city for me. A step back in time so to speak. She's a fickle mistress for sure and chased me out of camp more than once by escaping her banks. Ironic though that the same action taking crops from the fields in the spring is the same that makes those fields some of the most fertile and productive around. I can't help but wonder how the average yield over the course of years compares to fields not within reach of the river.
It seems INDNR is on a mission to acquire much of the Wabash floodplain nowadays and I've got mixed emotions about it.
Two summers ago our Bou Scout troop did a 52 mile, 3 day canoe trip from Logansport to LaFayette. It was a blast. I couldn't believe how shallow & how wide the river was.
See what I mean, the river provides food with little effort needed.
It does get pretty shallow during the dry summer months, I've walked out in the center for miles, but during the wet seasons can be a raging beast. In April it's often fifteen feet higher and it gets even wider when it spills out of the banks, as I'm sure Otahyoni can validate.
