Islip NY here. Brewing for about 8 years All Grain. Don't know of too many brewers here on Long Island. Good to see there are more out there.

I was looking to get into this amazingly awesome hobby. My buddy was telling me to get something called Mr. Beer or Mr. brew or something like that. Any thoughts or opinions on this starting kit?

Yes to Homebrewing

Hey folks. I'm all-grain for 8-9 batches and hooked.

Angelvito, I never tried Mr Beer, but I'm pretty sure it is one of the cheapest way to experience intro homebrewing. Someone bought my dad a starter kit for Xmas, years ago. we eventually tried it and I was hooked.

A non-Mr. Beer starter kit from Northern Brewer might cost you around $100 for a 5 gallon (two cases of beer) batch of beer (including equipment and ingredients).

I tried it once and found the results enjoyable, but not worth the enormous effort (to me). That said, I do roast my own coffee, which many say the same thing about.
Lots of great beers available, and a micro-brewery right here in town.

No but I've been thinking about joining for 2 years. I keep meeting them at events and drinking their brew...I am thinking about going this Monday...Like I do every third Monday of the month. I will join eventually, but .... well you know how it is.

My father started out with Mr. Beer. He made good beer with it but out grew it really quickly. Like was said...I think you are better off with a $100 kit that you can brew 5 Gallons in. I started out with True Brew kit about 8 years ago. I still use most of the equipment in that kit although I am doing all grain now.
