Mardi Gras

Does anyone know what date Mardi Gras is on this year, and when the best time to go would be? My birthday is in early February and I was going to plan a trip.

Mardi Gras 2011 is "late" next year and is March 8th.

If you want to go for Mardi Gras itself, then I'd go no later than March 5th. If you want parades, look for all the "Uptown" parades that travel on St. Charles. These are more family oriented and very much enjoyable. If you want the party, then head to Bourbon St.

I avoid New Orleans for Mardi Gras. The smaller towns in La have much better family atmospheres.

Lafayette, Lake Charles, Ville Platte, and Mamou are my favorites.

Mamou still has a traditional Chicken Chase. It's awesome.

The best time is to go for the 2nd weekend right before Fat Tuesday, and stay through Mardi Day. That weekend has the big night parades, and really great parades during the day, Monday has Lundi Gras parades, and then...Mardi Gras! That is definitely what you should do!
