Rocky Gap is not good camping! It's better if you go out to Deep Creek State Park, Swallow Falls (my fav) or Herrington Manor.

Year ago, Rocky Gap was good in the fall. SWMBO and I woud go for a week tenting, and have the entire campground to ourselves. I haven't been back since they turned it into a resort with golf course. New Germany was pretty nice back then as well.

What is it about Elk Neck that you don't like? My family goes up there several times a year.

Baltimore county has some nice ones, but check out the Shenandoah. You can also head up to the border near WVA and there are some fun lazy rivers. Look up Harper's Ferry

Can anyone recommend some nice backpacking trails? I don't mind primitive (i.e. not designated camping areas) as long as the trail is clearly marked.

I strongly suggest hiking the AT in MD. Great maintained trails with lots of good views!

Also check out backpacking trails in Greenridge state forest as well as Savage River state forest.
