I was with you up to this point. A big football program makes money for a school, money that helps to pay for other athletic programs that don't bring in the bucks, so I think that paying for a good coach is worth it. I was a bit surprised to find out how much guaranteed money that Coach Kill is getting considering that he hasn't coached a big program (if the gophers still qualify for that title) but I'll go along with it.
That being said, the University of Minnesota isn't a business it's a university, the University of Phoenix is a business. The primary focus should be on providing the best learning experience and the best research facilities that it can. The athletic programs do provide some real value for the community and for the university but should be ancillary. I think the U of M focuses too heavily on research and not enough on learning (part of the reason that costs have gotten so high in my opinion) but that's a topic for another thread.
