I'm a bit of a history geek and want to know if anyone has recommendations for decent stops (museums, etc.) along I-44 between St Louis & Springfield. I'm looking for something that can be enjoyed in a hour or so and located within 15 minutes of the highway. I travel between those 2 cities often enough, but rarely stop between them. There has to be something cool or interesting along the way...
theres all kinds of stuff between stlouis and springfield along I-44. you can cruse route 66 through there. you can stop at the museum in waynsville check out the historical buildings around the phelps county courthouse in rolla. you can go to newburg and check out the huston house that was built in the late 1800's
plenty of Civil War era events took place along the route, Jesse James, Bloody Bill, Wilsons Creek was mentioned it that had logistics alll the way through Rolla. Many things to look for and see.
That was my first thought as well. A trip to see Jesse James hideout in Meramec Caverns might be just the ticket for you. I don't remember how far off the highway it is though. Not sure if it was within a 15 minute drive or not.
Any particular kind of history you are most interested in? That might help get you better choices to visit.
