Instead of supplementing artificially high medical costs why don't we bring down the costs instead?

It dose not have to be free health care....just affordable.

That's what we're trying for. Let me see if I can explain with an over simplified example.

Suppose we have 100 people. The average actual cost for a hospital to provide care to one person per year is $1000. 50 of these people have insurance, 25 of these people pay their own way. The hospital collects $75,000 legitimately, but provides $100,000 worth of services. So the hospitals run up their charges to match. Now, each bill is $1333. The hospital provides $100,000 worth of services and collects $100,000. But 75 in 100 of these people have paid more - a lot more - than they received in services, and 25 of these people have paid nothing.

With either Socialist universal healthcare or Personally Responsible individual mandate, each of these 100 people now pays their own way, the socialists through higher taxes and the mandated directly. The hospital collects $100,000, provides $100,000 worth of service. Each bill the hospital sends out is $1000, and they're all paid.

This, my friends, is why the individual mandate makes sense, and *will* save responsible people money. It will increase costs only to those people who were previously freeloading off the system.
