House cuts work schedule to campaign

OK, maybe it's not such a bad thing, the less they work the less they screw up..

The House will cut its legislative schedule by a day next week to give lawmakers extra time to campaign in their districts.
The office of Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said Friday the first votes would not take place until Wednesday evening, instead of Tuesday. The lone, significant item on the House agenda is a small-business lending bill that passed the Senate last week. The bill is a major Democratic priority ahead of the midterm elections.

The shortened week comes as Democratic members have urged party leaders to give them as much time in their districts as possible. Many have requested the current four-week schedule for the pre-election legislative session be reduced by a week, allowing them the entire month of October to campaign.

House leaders are considering that change, but a senior Democratic aide said Friday that no decision had been made. Democrats are also debating whether to vote on extending Bush-era tax cuts for the middle class prior to the election, which could impact how long lawmakers stay in town.

The House is still scheduled to be in session Friday, but votes then are often canceled, meaning lawmakers could have less than two full days in the Capitol next week.
