What the government has done is to allow these ranchers the opportunity to make a living from cattle. Most of the protestors are living on welfare or disability. Even Finicum admitted he didn't do much ranching, most of his income was from raising foster children.
They were supposed to be paying $20 per unit (one cow and calf) per year to graze. If they can't make a living at that price they are stupid. This land never belonged to them, but they want it given to them, more welfare. If this land belonged to anyone else, it would be Native Americans. This has been federal government land since we took it from Mexico.
Bundy tried to claim they had been there since the 1870s, but his family didn't live in the state until 1946.

Government overreach is serious, give it power and it will abuse it. I have experienced it but i have a classic small scale example. A friend of mine who has a doctorate in engineering went into a SS office. He was the only client and there was one person working. After a considerable wait he approached the man at the desk to find out when he might be able to see someone. The pointed at a sign which said take a number, he took a number and sat down again. After a prolonged show of paper shuffling the man looked at the board and called his number. BLM officials can very much act like the SS worker and it very much tees off ranchers.

The BLM spends more (surprise, surprise) on land management than it takes in and Obama wants to raise fees which will only cause more discontent. Since the constitution has no provision for federal land ownership why not give the land to the respective states and get out of the fiasco and the tax burden?

If the states had that land, some politician would give It away or sell it and it would end up being a toxic waste dump or strip mined. If they had the national parks, Old Faithful would be the 18th hole on a golf course.

Gosh Eddie, the states are actually worse than the federal government. I too can give you several examples, and I agree with Sam that the states would sell it and privatize the lands, much to your delight, so that the average person would not be permitted on it.

In my area the Forest Service tries to keep people off some areas. I guess they think it belongs to them. The problem is government overreach both fed and state.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Think that has something to do with endangered species........

Get in contact with the militia and have them occupy those patches of ground. They certainly have no special interests

No endangered species, no explanation.

As a side bar a friend bought land from an Indian and built a house on it only to find that at least part of it was FS land. The ranger was a hard ass and he could never work out an agreement. He did his homework and found a piece of affordable land that that adjoined FS land. Immediately after a new ranger was rotated in he approached him with a land swap offer and all was well.

Western NC, near the Snowbird Cherokee Reservation. He made sure it wasn't on the reservation and had a deed but hadn't a clue it included USFS land.

The feds own only 7.7% of NC compared to 64.9% for Utah, 52.9% for Oregon and 48.1% for Wyoming.
