Washington is so ahead of the times, by paying people at the bottom, a somewhat livable wage, that a person can actually servive on. They also legalized weed too. I'm wishing I lived there myself. I could use a bit of that right now! Anyone in Washington benifiting from this increased wage?

A co worker actually has a friend who quit their job and went across the border to washington, to work at the same franchise. This kid is beaming I tell you! He's making some 2 bucks more an hour in the same job.

Even $9.15 is not a liveable wage, unless you live with your parents. Especially here in WA where the cost of living is so high. An extra $2/hour is not very helpful if the rent is $400/month more. I suppose if you live in Moscow, Idaho and work in Pullman, WA but then the gas for the commute would eat it up. Even with no income tax, the state sales tax is about 10% in the Seattle area.
Sure beats the hell out of what the other states are paying though.

I hope folks realize that raising the minimum wage just results in higher operating costs for a business which equals higher costs to the consumer.... Sheesh. Also, I still think that if a highschooler can make a living wage, they (in their youthful wisdom of course...) are more likely to think that they can drop out of school. "I can pay my rent and bills on the job I have...Why stay in this school... I'd rather flip burgers and party..."

My pet proposal is a combination of a minimum wage and a requirement on medium and large businesses to meet or beat the poverty rate. If 90% of the population in your region lives above the poverty line, at least 90% of your workforce must earn a living wage for that region.
If your business doesn't do that - like Walmart and a number of other businesses - then your business's net affect on the economy is negative. You take more money out of the economy than you put back into it. You shrink the economy. You're a job killer. And we'd do better without your unfair competitive practices in our marketplace.

I read recently that almost all Walmart employees in California, except for management, qualify for foodstamps. I don't know how it is set up there but in Missouri, after a housing and utility deduction, a family of 4 must have less than $340 a month spendable income.

The bolded part is the important part, IMO. I'm not married to this particular plan, just *something* that will mitigate this kind of damage. Whatever regulation we put in place, I think it should be strongly tied to the market, not implemented by fiat declaration.
The plan I suggested (is supposed to) self-regulate through the same market forces at work in the economy. A more stable, more predictable economy is a faster-growing economy. It would trim the peaks a bit, but it would also fill the valleys.

I most of CA even two earners at minimum wage would have to get some kind of assistance to make ends meet with the high cost of living. Keep in mind, though, that without Walmart and other low-wage jobs they would have nothing.
