The problem is complex as any economic tinkering would not immediately yield favorable results. For example if the war ended tomorrow what would we do with all those soldiers, all those DoD employees, all those defense contractors, all those suppliers and the expansion thereof? The same is true for all those useless (even detrimental) government agencies, offices, bureaus and their advisers, contractors and the expansion thereof. Every pork livered congressman would be screaming if his/her state were impacted so the battle has not even begun. Two pork livered parties got us into this mess and only the TEA Party has begun to address it. Additional revenue would only be the answer if a real solution were offered with a timeline for implementation. So far neither party has shown that it could responsibly handle more revenue. You don't give gasoline to an arsonist and expect good results.

yeah, so much so that these tea party republicans have fought hard to keep military spending off the table, even though was some reduction it is such a tiny insignificant amount and the military is crying foul about it making us unsafe

Just pulling them back to the US cuts the logistical costs, the hazardous duty pay, the cost of activating reserve units, the cost of "stop loss" - keeping troops in service after they've completed their contracts...

Then you have the fuel costs. I believe I heard once that the military consumes more fuel than any other entity. Yeah, let's cut this back as well and maybe we could afford to put some money down on more important things.

Well, yeah, but it depends on what you consider "an entity". I mean, saying "The Military" is kinda like saying "The Transportation Industry" - which can refer to everything from a taxi cab to trucking to commercial aviation to rail to ocean shipping, and everything else that assists the moving of goods and people from point A to point B.
I highly doubt that the military uses more fuel than "The Transportation Industry", although I'm sure it uses more than any individual company and probably any sector of that industry
