Drug testing welfare recipients

"Lawmakers in more than 30 states have proposed drug testing for welfare benefits in recent years, but only Florida has followed through with blanket testing of welfare applicants. A federal court suspended the effort, citing the U.S. Constitution's protections against unreasonable searches by the government, but not before several months of testing proved the scheme a remarkable failure. The program cost the state more than it saved, and people applying for TANF benefits turned out to be less likely to use drugs than the general population."

The walmarts of America need to pay a living wage and quit depending on the government to subsidize their cheap wages. Sam, you look a lot like me, but my beard is quite a bit bigger and not quite so white!

Well, if the federal courts came in and suspended the efforts, then of course they didn't see the payoffs..... I definitely think that if employers (who provide a paycheck) can drug test then the government (again, giving a paycheck... for what I don't know...) should be able to test those on the dole. So can the government drug test government employees? Why is that not considered unreasonable search? If you are on welfare, supposedly looking for employment and trying to regain your independence... I don't see anything wrong with the government requiring you to show you are employable. If you cannot pass an employers drugscreen, you are not employable.

You don't seem to understand the results. They tried it, it didn't work. Drug users among welfare people are rare according to the results.

I had to do some research (you didn't have a link to back up anything...) and yes, you appear to be correct. Florida lost money on the deal. I still don't think it is a good idea to have any drug users supplemented through government assistance. If someone can afford drugs, then they don't need assistance. I did not get hired one time because I failed a drug test... (long time ago mind you..)... Whose fault was it? mine. After reading the article, I understand it a little better. It looks like it was poorly implemented. People scheduling their own tests? Many people cancelled tests? I know there are ways to get around some tests. There are ways to time your use to get around tests. I used to do it. We must find a way to get around that. Some sort of accountability needs to be there. It isn't ALWAYS about saving money.

A simple SALIVA test will reveal much information.
A Follicle (Hair) test will reveal 6 months worth of Drug use and 1 hair can be accessed anywhere on the body and NO ONE can shave off all hair everywhere on their body.
FloriDUH speaks for itself.

WELFARE/STATE AID/GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE RECIPIENTS NEED BE DRUG TESTED AND MANY NEED BE STERILIZED.
Only the HONEST ones will have no problem attending such tests.
Those found to have POSITIVE FOR DRUGS they cannot prove are PRESCRIPTIONS, to be instantly REMOVED from further benefits.

HOW difficult, through the deft and little known attribute of COMMON SENSE, is constructing and implementing such program?
Obviously very difficult for the state of floriDUH, yet that state is but one of 51 (51 because washington, District of Calamity considers itself separate, there4 another state/province or is it 52 including Puerto Rico?). The 49 Continental States, leaving out Alaska because of the palin syndrome.

CHEERS!!

But there again, you are ignoring the results. Testing has been a failure. It costs way more than it saves.
A few years ago, the high school here decided to random drug test athletes and those involved in any school related activities. After hundreds of tests, they had one positive test and it was for pot.
People always assume the worst of athletes and poor people and the tests prove they are wrong.
