Very powerful pictures.

I can't help but to wonder why there was so much devastation. That size earthquake occurs often in So Cal, but it doesn't cause anywhere near that amount of damage. Was it because of non-reinforced concrete? The lack of depth of the epicenter? I understand it really doesn't matter now, but I sure would like to understand why.

The earlier Quake loosened many structures, then the last Quake tossed them about.

Living along the Rim of Fire, Quakes are a Natural occurence.
Glad for them there wasn't as well a Tsunami.

At 12:51 p.m. on Tuesday, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck the Canterbury region of New Zealand's South Island, near the country's second-largest city, Christchurch. It is an aftershock of a massive, deeper earthquake that hit New Zealand last September, and has already caused more damage, injuries, and fatalities than the earlier quake. Hundreds of structures in Christchurch have now been severely damaged or collapsed completely. At the moment, at least 65 deaths have been confirmed, hundreds have been injured, and many are still missing. Below are images from New Zealand late yesterday, more will be added as they come in today.
Wonder if NZ has active volcanoes?

The kiwis are sitting smack dab on top of a destructive plate margin.
Very active area tectonically speaking.

When I look at all the large cities astride the Ring of Fire I question our sanity. I loved New Orleans but rebuilding a city that's lower than it's adjoining river males no sense at all.
Chile was recently hit by a subduction zone quake just like the northwest is overdue for.

I don't care for hurricanes, they're unrelenting monster storms. Tornadoes are nice and fairly easy to survive. earthquakes remain unpredictable and can destroy your home and all roads leading to it.

When I read about earthquakes, volcanos, hurricanes, wild fires, flooding, landslides, toronados, poisonous wildlife, and other things of that ilk, I keep getting more amazed with the benign nature of the part of the world I live in.

pretty much true but there are curious critters in your woods. I wasn't far from Quebec on one camping trip to the Rideau. On that trip a storm hit that dropped beaver weakened trees all around us. It killed people in NY and Ohio too.
We survived that with no more than a soaked tent which I attempted to dry out with a Coleman lantern. I guess the light fascinated the biggest porcupine in North America because he moved into the tent. <sigh>
That beaver who almost got us with trees was a master at slapping the water when you least expected it.
At least the black squirrels were friendly.
