I always thought it was easier to swat and grab one-handed. After fighting with the wife, who just leaves the empty roll and place the new roll vertically on top anyway, I don't care any more as long as it's there. If it's backward - TOUGH. Go outside and grab some leaves!

If you have kids or cats it's understandable since they tend to grab or paw at it too much and with it over it tends to spill over itself and undo the whole roll. Doesn't happen if it's under.
