Creatively ignore their words. Look thoughtful and say "Really?" at inappropriate moments. In other words drive them nutz trying to get your usually predictable reaction. If you have an obvious "button" you will always have volunteers to push it.

Idyll threat, you said you're given that up. I retired my fists 40 years ago this year. It was expected to fail but it endured.
I did need to pick up a few coping mechanisms but that's not hard if you're willing. If you can spot the attempt you can play matador to his myopic bull. Try it although I suspect you did that long ago,

Agree blucher, Once I was on to him ,this person that I knew, the game was over. He was a master manipulator. I had a few options : take it or leave it. The last one seemed the most agreable to me. Never again, learn to recognize the signs and take controll of the situation , but not the kind with the fists. (Think jail for punching some one?)
I never started fights but I was enjoying breaking them up. Then over time I realized I'd never convinced anyone of anything, just reduced the equation to might makes right which is silly.
People fill in the blanks with their wishes. Ask good questions and then compare the answers to behavior.
