My wife has "gone missing" for a week now.
The police told me to prepare for the worst.
So I went back to Good-Will and got her clothes back.

As reported, I Googled spellchecker and in fact, they have Canadian, French, etc. I learn something new everyday. As a matter of fact, I hate that phrase, and it kinda ticks me off!

Phonetically speaking, the lack of the "U" seems to make Americans pronounce those words as coler, flaver, laber, and neighber. We actually pronounce them the way you spell them.

i thought the "u" came from british (true) english and has nothing to do with french?...

I think the perception of abduction creates a sense of fear and xenophobia as where gone missing could be a nonviolent choice.
