A look back to yesterday..

A great video of the streets of San Francisco in the 1900's. Check out the cars, people, horses and trolleys in the street, cars going the wrong way and people crossing everywhere...

This film, originally thought to be from 1905 until David Kiehn with the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum figured out exactly when it was shot. From New York trade papers announcing the film showing to the wet streets from recent heavy rainfall & shadows indicating time of year & actual weather and conditions on historical record, even when the cars were registered (he even knows who owned them and when the plates were issued!).. It was filmed only four days before the Great California Earthquake of April 18th 1906 and shipped by train to NY for processing. Amazing, but true!

That was awesome Ken, thanks for sharing that. I particularly like the police officer with the billy club.

I concur. Amazing. Looks like it must have been filmed by the guy driving the streetcar or by a passenger in the front seat.

Nice to see there was a time when people actually knew how to maneuver themselves and their various means of conveyance without creating havoc and destruction.

But next time, ya wanna try to improve the video quality

Thanks for sharing that Ken. What a treat! Kind of creapy to know that 4 days later, all the people who would die or be injured.......And we now know why we have lines down our roads, traffic laws, stop lights, sidewalks..........

The top speed is like five miles an hour, that would have driven me nuts.
