i have never been there. but up through john day is pretty country. if u r up for an adventure head for the steens. glacial carved canyons. its out in the middle of no where and a long drive but absolutely breath taking views. however, you may want to wait til late spring for the majority of the snow to melt off and the roads to be accessible.
