Cutesy decor looks like crass New Orleans. and New Orleans food is not "southern" nor "soul" , too pretentious for what we would call and my experience with southern and soul
Portly middle aged hostess was pleasant until we asked not to be seated next to a table full of sub 6 year old children..
Waitress was an amateur, we were mstly ignored. She had only 3 doubles and a six and a busboy to help, but we couldn't get a simple glass of water after 3 attempts.. We wanted another beer and another glass of wine but never saw the waitress until it was time for the bill. We had to chase down the busboy to get catsup for our fries.
Wine and beer prices too high for the quality.
I have had much better southern food in roadside shacks.
The food was adequate.
Given the high prices and poor service and average food quality.. poor value.
We were snubbed by the scowling portly hostess as we left. ( we actually had to navigate around her as she would not move)
We overtipped given what we experienced.
Try it at your own risk.
It is a foo foo palace masquerading as soemthing it did not deliver. Kinda creepy.
We probably won't go back unless invited by friends. However, we were warned before we went that we would be disappointed. Should have listened.
Our choices of restaurants deliver the goods. Some more expensive, some less, but
very good value. Neither of these get it. These are restaurants that are self indulgent. More interested in image than substance.
For breakfast and sandwiches try Tee Time on H , or across the street, just a little diner called Wunder Bar .. funky and fair.
One of our favorites remains the Vine on 199 near Albertsons or R Haus on River Road... Sunday Brunch and buffet during the middle to ebd of the week.. folksy and good vaue, nice couple owns the joint, been there for years.
And AJA for upscale on E. Tues thru Sat...
I live down the road from GP but go there often and really like it. It's certainly a smaller town so depending on what you're used to/looking for, that could be a negative. Also, as with most small towns these days, it's struggling financially. Currently KFalls seems to be in the worst shape, but it wasn't to long ago that GP was having issues too... like not enough money to pay their law enforcement. Anyway, most people around these parts can protect ourselves just fine (LOL) so that's never been a huge concern for me, but it might be for you so I thought I should mention it.
In general though, I'd definitely suggest it. Great fishing, and outdoor rec around the SO region.

I moved here from Merced Ca years ago. I like the 4 season climate, but it rains in the winter with a rare snowfall in the valley; the higher above our 900feet the more snow. life is slower and people friendly (drivers even ease off to let you in their lane). I can't be negative; I am a real estate broker!
Lots of outdoor possibilities; coast 2 hr, cascades 1 hr, same for skiing; a number of mountain lakes; some for boating, many for hiking; and the rivers, Rogue, Applegate and Illinois. Culture: theaters here for performances and drama; even opera. . . and Shakespear Festival and others in Ashland, 45 min.

I would come & live for a bit as a renter..just to acclimate yourself to our area. We are out in Jerome Prairie area..not too far from town, but still on outskirts. Near school..churches & such. The weather is in the midst of change, so you have to judge for yourself later on. It was very special to us when we came here, but the last two years have been cloudier than usual, & colder longer. Make sure you get some place with a heat pump AND fireplace! With prices on Electricity going up you do need both. Also for a blackout, you can cook on wood stove or on BBQ.
Most of the people are nice. You get your normal oddballs, but you don't have to associate with them. Plenty to pick from. The boonies areas are the hardest to choose to live in. FAR OUT from town. Alot going on there, & you may not take to it. Closer is nice & we think you are better off. Usually less problems. & with gas prices..much better for going to town or on 199 stores for shopping.
We love it. That is all I can say. Bowling establishments are helpful. They keeps alot busy.

My wife and I hope to move to the Grants Pass area soon. We've spent time there and really like the place. It will be where we retire and we think we have found our last outpost. We plan to live a bit outside of town.
So, are there any negatives we should know about?
My wife & I moved here from Merced in 1969 (didn't like the valley fogs there) Our first year was tough because we had fog here, too! It was because of all the little 'gypo' mills and wigwam burners spewing smoke for the fog to collect around. Those mills are gone, so winter fogs are much less frequent. Our life style is slower and less aggressive than I remember California, so there may be a cultural adjustment.
We have a 3 lane street going South through town (6th) and it narrows to 2 as it reaches the Rogue River bridge. People actually slack off and let drivers squeeze in! I love that!!!!
We have a very low property tax and no sales tax, but that means some services folks in California take for granted may not be available here. There is no tax supported fire service in many rural parts of the county, though there are several subscription services available.
If you plan to live in the woods, you need to be alert to fire danger, clearing brush away from home and structures.

Although the show is on the small side, there is a variety of Guns, ammo & accessories. I'm sure you will like the instant check for buying. You will have to get used to all the things that are legal here that would get you arrested in the peoples republic. It' held at the Fairgrounds.

I wanted to re-open this forum as I too am considering a move to Grants Pass. We took a trip there last year during the fire season, and unfortunately were not able to see much of the city because of the dense smoke. So fires are a negative. However, we were able to visit with the ladies at the chamber. They were very gracious and informative. I suggest if you have not contacted them, do so. they have a lot of knowledge brochures, maps and guidance tools to help you find your way through the maze of uncertainty. Also they recommend using the Grants Pass welcome wagon. Lots of freebies and the like. Hope this is of some help to new people looking for a new path to their future. Slowink

Not a problem, I wish someone would have directed me there sooner. It would have cut a lot of corners. The Chamber is a good place to stop and check out any community. That's their job. Slowink
Would love some people to chat about Grants Pass living there now 2014 as most information here pretty far back. Need to rent there in 7 months. Where is best parts to live look for apartment? And then will look to buy house. Retire there. Or town close buy.
