I doubt you meant "plow" literally. Actually the old logging RR's and roads are a legacy for camping, hunting and hiking. Back East many have been converted to walking, biking or horse paths but that's only useful near towns.
For now they're the primary access for fire fighting in deep woods.

Me too, fortunately OSU & UofO both have large image libraries. History fascinates me and so much of Oregon's History is so recent it's largely covered photographically.

I am about to be spending a lot of time in the OSU library, might have to take a look at some more pictures when I need a break from studing.

My wife and I spent a week in your beautiful state last summer. Our favorite was the drive up the coast. Great train pics.

Learn all you can about the OSU film/print collection. I'd be interested in helping with the work but commuting to Corvallis is too expensive particularly with climbing gas prices.

Could you ask what sort of off site backup they're using? Glass negs hate earthquakes. A valuable historic collection was destroyed in the SF earthquake.
