A little known hiking/bicycling trail in west virginia...the greenbrier river trail!

A LITTLE KNOWN HIKING/BICYCLING TRAIL IN WEST VIRINIA...THE GREENBRIER RIVER TRAIL!

When they no longer needed freight/passenger railroad service up the Greenbrier River from North Caldwell to Cass, they removed all the steel rails and railroad ties and ballast stone and left the right-of-way clear and hence a level path between the two areas.......a distance of approximately 80 miles..
this lended well to creating a path for hiking/biking, a level railroad grade along the Greenbrier River...........all are welcome for your outdoor enjoyment...

When you arrive at CASS W.Va........you'll find a great surprise........

The Greenbrier River Trail:

Eighty miles may seem like a long way, but the miles just fly by when you are immersed in nature as only the Greenbrier River Trail can bring it to you.

We are glad you stopped by to get more information about the trail, or to get race results from our big fundraiser. We have been called West Virginia?s premier rail to trail conversion and we hope you will visit the trail soon and see why!

I just wish someone would get one of those trails for low-speed 4x4 use. I'd love to tour old RR bed in my CJ!

Welcome
Quote:

The Greenbrier River Trail is a 78-mile long rail trail operated by West Virginia State Park system. Trail uses include bicycling, backpacking, cross-country skiing and horseback riding. A packed, crusher run surface coupled with a mere one per cent grade creates an ease of riding that allows cyclists, young and old, to enjoy the many breathe-taking views. The trail closely mirrors its namesake, the Greenbrier River, for most of its length offering trail users countless opportunities for swimming and fishing.
The Greenbrier River Trail traverses one of the most remote areas in the state and lies adjacent to the Monongahela National Forest, Seneca State Forest and Watoga State Park. A trip along the trail is truly a “Wild and Wonderful” experience.
