I'll be the first to say it, but I can't stand McMenamin's (McMinimum's as I say). The food is too salty and they use garlic to cover up bad cooking. The beers are bad. Boring hops, poor temperature control, and they all seem to taste like different colored versions of the same thing.
I am, however, a big fan of the deschutes restaurant in the pearl, and also of HUB.
I like Widmers Gasthaus Pub, they have great food and of course great beers. I really like the pub only beers, it makes you feel like you're getting in on the secret stash.
The Sockeye Cream Stout at the New Old Lompocs is always nice. The Oaks Bottom Public House is maybe 1/2 mile from Sellwood Public House, on Bybee.
And if you like the Sellwood Public House, you ought to try out the Muddy Rudder down Tacoma closer toe the Sellwood Bridge. Very nice beer selection and very frequently book nice acoustic "Americana" musicians.
Not to be cliche but I like to grab a nice hammerhead from McMenamins.
Howz the food up there, ours used to be fantastic. I loved their cornbread above all others I had EVER had.. then they stopped making it.. then the food according to my friends started to suck and service was worse. Ungodly wait times and cold icky food.. I'm not pissed, I'm disapointed..
