Trip to DC

Planning a trip to see all there is to see in DC.

What do you locals recommend I put on the itinerary?

Any ideas help, I've never been!

How long are you planning on being in DC? You will never see everything in one week. So for the first time visit, I would spend most of your time at the mall (Not the shopping kind either). The museums, the monuments, capitol building and the white house are all located near there. That will take you a few weeks to see everything. ;)

yeah first time in would recommend the mall as well. You'll get the most bang for the buck if you will for short stays.

Funny story... my daughter heard the word mall and got extremely excited. We had to explain what is was to her.

Anyway, we will be there for about 8 days. Hopefully I can put the trip together in such a way that we will get to experience as much as possible.

you should be able to do a lot in 8 days. Not sure the ages of the kids, but for adults and older kids the Holocaust Museum is a sobering but worthwhile experience

I'm also a fan of the National Zoo ... especially on a nice day.

oh and I personally think that Arlington National Cemetary is a must see

I've been to a Holocaust museum before and it was exactly that, humbling.

It's been five years since I last lived in DC, but there are some interesting things to do. If you can plan some things in advance, you might check out:

USMC Silent Drill Team

You might also see about visiting your congressman and scoring Whitehouse tickets or a whatever they have to give constituents. You could search for military band concerts as well. They are always worthwhile. Sometimes there are concerts at the Iwo Jima Memorial. Mt. Vernon is always worth a visit. The Smithsonian Air and Space Annex out near Dulles is also very worthwhile.

regarding your trip to D.C.
great that you are giving thought. lived there 24 years. kinda disagree with other folks.
seen so many kids on trips dragged through mall.
depends on age. o.k. Lincoln Memorial AT NIGHT.
Neighborhoods. Capitol Hill. Eastern Market, not on Monday when it is closed. Adams Morgan. The sculpture garden and
outdoor skating. Indian Art. Library of Congress. Dunbarton Oaks in Georgetown.
Outdoor concerts near the Capital every Tuesday? night.
