Haven't had a great one yet... The home-made fatty melt is the best I've ever had... 2 burgers, 8 pieces of bacon and three grilled cheese sandwiches (used as the buns, big mac style)... Incredible.

Beer Bar at Cafe Centro has a damned good burger and really quick service. I work at the Graybar Building, so it is only about a forty five second walk to that side of MetLife.

For the quick and easy, still love Five Guys. The one on 55th between 5th and 6th is the best one in the area. Strange thing about Five Guys is the quality varies greatly between them, from what I have seen.

Bistro Le Steak. The rest of the menu that we've tried has been OK (except the Caesar Salad ... bleh), but the burger is totally unbelievable. Ridiculously good. And pretty cheap, too.

The place is more of a franchise now but I absolutely love a fresh Five Guys burger, so good.

Pipers Kilt in the Bronx is one of the best burgers I have ever had... try the eastchester

homebrew 11-20-2010 02:49 PM

Rare, which used to be a nice little dive on Bleecker St. near 6th but is now a big-shot loungy kind of deal in the Fashion 26 hotel on 26th off 7th. The rooms a little much for me now and the prices went up (though not that much) but they still make a nice variety of outstanding burgers. There are other outposts around town, too. NYC Restaurants: Rare Bar & Grill American cuisine events catering reception facility area Chelsea and Lexington Ave.

Bronx ale house on 225th makes a pretty good burger if you are looking for a traditional juicy burger.

George Keeley also makes a great burger with a twist. It is half beef/half pork with a bunch of seasonings and hot pepper. It ha a great kick to it and is so juicy, you almost need a bib.

Shake shack makes decent burgers too, but they are too commercialized.

Bronx Ale House on 225th? I know of the one on 238th which also has a decent burger. Is that the one on 225th and B'way?
And you can never go wrong with Shake Shack :)

I'll throw Landmarc in TriBeCa or the Time Warner building & Nice Matin on Amsterdam & 79th into the ring. Awesome burgers at both places.

PangaeaBeerFood 11-23-2010 08:33 AM

Minetta Tavern. It's a place on MacDougal Street near NYU that makes their burger from dry-aged beef, then braises it in butter. It's a $25 burger, but it is unlike anything you've ever tasted in your life.

dkreidler 11-23-2010 10:39 AM

JAckson Hole makes some fantastic burgers. My fave is the Guacamole burger, which is served with guac, tortilla chips, salsa n sour cream. Who needs the deluxe platter (ie, fries and a pickle) with all of that?! Damn, now I'm all hungry and crap. :S

Jap30 11-24-2010 04:35 AM

Ahhhhhhh, Pipers Kilt. I used to love going there. Their burgers were good, but their All You Can Drink Sunday Brunch was the best. The best burger I had was at a bar called McCales or McAles, on 9th ave in the mid 40's, west of the Marriot. We used to call them brontosaurus-burgers because it was the size of the plate. That with a side of steak fries (and some lipator) made for a great lunch. It was also the place that they filmed the bar scenes in the movie Money Train.......

Anyway that bar is gone now and I haven't been to Pipers Kilt in 15 years.

werdhomie 11-26-2010 03:54 PM

I heard peter luger's is best

thedude00 11-27-2010 09:36 PM

m4nif3st0 12-01-2010 11:43 AM

Shake Shack puts out a good burger and there are locations all over.

Another great old school burger place to check out is JG Melon on the UES

Potatosalad 12-02-2010 01:21 PM

I second JG Melon's. Fantastic burgers, and the staff is super friendly.

Sweetnighter 12-06-2010 08:08 PM

Paul's on 2nd Av in the village. Amazing, classic, good price.

CaptKiRkLeS 12-19-2010 03:17 PM

Duffy's Bar on staten island...one of the best burgers, on an english muffin and the BEST sweet potato fries. But the place I am craving again is Fette Sau in brooklyn. They have some of the best BBQ.

hlumbard 12-20-2010 07:07 PM

3rd JG Melons!

surfsquirrels 12-21-2010 10:02 AM

McHale's on 46th & 8th had the best burger I ever, ever had. Sadly, they closed a few years back. Such a shame!

llamatongue 12-21-2010 10:41 AM

Corner Bistro is always a fantastic burger. Not to mention good beer and a nice atmosphere.

BrooklynBrewClub 12-21-2010 02:24 PM

Corner Bistro! Yum!

marquis 12-23-2010 10:06 AM

Black Iron Burger on East 5th between A & B. Get the special. And they've got good beers on tap. Nothing like BIB. The incredibly hot grill and the amazing beef. Try it, you'll be a convert.

Other good spots in the nabe include East Village Tavern (under-rated sliders and Cask Ale) and the too-popular Royale.

In NY, to me the best is still Five Guys

spaak2000 12-28-2010 09:49 PM

Even though its not a "Specialty" burger place there are a few Five Guys burgers popping up around the city and they are awesome

JG11 01-03-2011 09:31 PM

My 2 best burgers were at a bar called the "Dakota RoadHouse" it's located between Church Street and West Broadway 3-4 blocks North of 7WTC, I guess the best way to find it NOWADAYS is to go to the controversal proposed mosque site and it's just to the left of it - not the kind of notoriety they were looking for. Also, Jackson Hole has amazing burgers whichever one you go to (there are several locations), there is one on 2nd Ave in the 70"s??

Loamy 01-18-2011 02:42 PM

I have go with one of three:

Good Burger in Williamsburg on Lorimer St between Devoe St & Metropolitan Ave. Heated outdoor area and served out of an old Airstream Trailer.

Dumont Burger in Williamsburg on Bedford between S2nd and S1st street.

Molly's on 3rd Ave and 23rd street in Manhattan. Irish pub with the old sawdust floors... great burgers though.

charlie505 01-21-2011 03:56 PM

Amity Hall on west 3rd in the village - stuffed burgers - and great beer

Also Bare Burger on LaGuardia Place - Bison, buffalo, Ostrich and other wild game burgers

AdamAnt 01-24-2011 08:53 PM

Molly's Shebeen
87 3rd Avenue
New York, NY 10010-5503

5 Napkin Burger

Rare (already mentioned)

and of course White Castle.

now i'm craving...

Fox01V 01-25-2011 08:33 PM

The Spotted Pig, The Corner Bistro, Bobby Van's and Shake Shack are some of the best that I have found.

14thegipper 02-03-2011 02:20 PM
