Snowkiting in Alaska

I have this dream about moving to Alaska and snowkiting as much as possible.

What areas keep snow for a long period and have decent wind?

up north most of the mountains have snow year round,

the other day we had 70 mph gusts on elmendorf, it was not a fun day on the flightline

sorry i'm not more help, i haven't experienced snowkiting yet. i get the basic principle, but don't know how much sustained wind is required

You should visit Anchorage for a week or two. This is a very large state and not very populated. Lot's of villages and so on. So base out of Anchorage and see what you can while you're there, just keep in mind it is very cold there and not much light this time of year.

^^agree 100%

its not too bad here ambient temperature wise currently, around 0 to low teens during the day.

however the wind chill wil kill you. literally

but being in this sport, i recon you know this already

O to low teens? It was -9 when I got to work this morning. A coworker has a traction kite he said he'd let me play with. Looks like fun, West Chester Lagoon seems to get a lot of wind it's right here in town.

if you're looking for snow and sustained winds, try North Dakota...

yeah it was -11 ish on the flightline today

-11? I guess I didn't realize how cold it is up there. Living in Utah, I love the cold/snow... But maybe not that cold. HAHA

remery829 01-13-2011 04:56 PM

-11 isn't even cold for here to be honest

I've never been snow kiting but I have kite boarded in the water and from what I hear you don't need very much wind to do it in the snow.
