Check Lefty's for pizza. The one on 30th street is the best one. The other is in the old Phil's BBQ location.

I try to compile a list of these types of places:
  • Antonelli's in Santee
  • The Butcher Shop in Kearny Mesa
  • Kansas City BBQ in Downtown
  • Point Loma Seafoods in Point Loma
  • El Pescador in La Jolla
  • Blue Water in Mission Hills

I'll think of more...

Phils BBQ is good, not a big fan of their sauce but it beats cooking ribs for 4 hours. The el toro is great and packed with meat, also must eat onion rings. I think they add them to your order no matter what

What about the BBQ join right down by the Midway. It is where Top Gun was filmed.

Cadillac Diner in Hillcrest is good with a cool '50s theme.
El Indio Mexican is on the east side of the 5 just across the freeway from Lindbergh field.
The Gas Lamp area of downtown is full of good places.
Of course all the Filippi's pizza places rock, and cheap. Sicilian style pizza, (Cheese goes on after all the other ingredients).

Totally agree with NateWithoutBeer. How has the whole world not picked up on the awesomeness of a good simple carne asada burrito. East coast Mexican food sucks! I can't understand why. Its not rocket science.

Some lesser known but worth mentioning places...
- Mexican food like you would get in Mexico, not the americanized versions (not to ding that, but something different)

Sublime Pizza - very different and rich pizzas and Mac&Cheese.

Urge Gastropub - Upscale food and stellar beer and wine selection.

Casa Guadalajara
- More familiar mexican, but one of my family's favorites

Berta's - around the corner from Casa G., but Central America themed.

Always been fond of Karinya Thai in PB, but haven't been there for many years.

I'm sure I'll think of others. Also +1 for Hodad's in OB.
