Why is it that almost all the mexican food places I've been in San Marcos are not spicy. Is that not authentic or just not used here?

Franchises suck. Hole-in-the-wall, mom-and-pop's are where it's at!

well this once was one of those places that expanded, b/c of the crowd. Its at least something to replace taco cabana, and the food here is a lot better than some places I've had in San Marcos, like Garcia's for example...well when comparing the tacos.

Best Mexican Food

Garcia's is at the top of my list for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. I also like Rogelio's. El Charro's is pretty good, too. There was a place out towards Redwood called Rancho Grande (it had been several other restaurants before that) in front of Rancho Vista that was really good. For the price, you can't beat Mana's - and there is something to be said about BYOB! Golfo de Mexico has some great ceviche and is also very cheap if you are adventurous enough to try Mexican style seafood.
For breakfast tacos I also like Chica's (on San Antonio) and El Primo's tacos (hidden on Alamo street at Holland behind the fire station). Of course I like Lolita's, too (just like Chica's only with a drive through and I think a little less bang for the buck). My wife had a bad experience with a tooth in her barbacoa taco from M&M off Bishop St. - so we have not been there in a couple of years.
I'm not usually a chain fan... but I like Los Cucos, although I like the food at their location in Seguin better. I used to be a fan of the Casa Maria here in town, but the quality went downhill after the first few months. They make some pretty good tortillas, though. Actually my favorite tortillas are at City Bakery, but Ta Molly's y mas makes some good tortillas, too. City Bakery and Ta Molly's also make great tamales. But for Mexican style sweetbread (pan dulce) I think the bakery at Casa Maria is better than City Bakery.
If you know of any place else worth trying let me know.
